The best business opportunities are rarely the ones everyone is talking about.
Septic is a perfect example. (As I’ve told you before)
Most people see a few trucks pumping tanks. I see a fragmented home service category with recurring revenue, weak competition, and real barriers to entry.
The marketing bar is incredibly low. Many established operators still have weak websites, few reviews, no Local Service Ads, and little visibility in search. If you answer the phone, show up professionally, educate customers, and build a recognizable brand, you can win share quickly.
But pumping is only the entry point.
A pump-out starts the relationship. From there, you have maintenance plans, repairs, jetting, pump replacements, inspections, emergency service, and eventually full system replacements. One customer can be worth $500 to $1,000 per year over time.
Contrary to what many people believe, the difficult part is not making the phone ring. It is building the capacity to handle the demand well.
That means trained technicians, trucks, dispatch, strong communication, and access to disposal infrastructure. In many markets, dump stations and treatment plants are becoming more expensive and restrictive.
All of that creates a real moat for operators who have built the right local relationships and systems.
My Takeaway
Septic is not flashy. But it has the ingredients of a scalable business: recurring demand, high-margin service work, and an industry prime for the taking.
